The technical reading arrived. Sebastian Raschka, after a few days with it, called Astra likely the best model he has used, then walked through what looped transformers are — and whether looping really has anything to do with hiding a chain of thought. OpenAI, for its part, pitched Astra as its most capable model for business.

The Information reported that Astra uses "recurrent depth" — looping its thinking internally instead of writing it out — which would leave less of a chain of thought for anyone to monitor. Redwood's CEO said he was extremely concerned; Zvi Mowshowitz warned of a "race to the bottom". By the same reports, Astra's use of the technique is limited.
